Brittney Burns loves using both the left and right sides of her brain – the high school senior sings, dances, acts, AND loves engineering. But it’s when we ask her about her volunteer trip to the Dominican Republic that she really lights up.
“We interviewed a group of women about what neighborhood project they would most like completed, and they told us it was the playground,” she says, describing how she and her group of fellow Global Glimpse teens refurbished a local playground and built a gazebo for the community in the middle of the park.
Brittney credits both her mom and dad with giving her the drive, ambition, and passions she has. Her dad, a veteran, is part of the reason she’s interested in biomedical engineering. During an Engineering summer camp at the University of Chicago, she was able to get a glimpse of how her interest in STEM could have a life-changing impact on veterans and others who’d lost limbs due to diseases. And when her mom went back to school for a master’s degree at the age of 46, Brittney was inspired by her mom’s hard work and dedication, realizing that she too could one day achieve graduate-level education.
It’s not a surprise, then, that Brittney’s choice of the one gift she would give to the world was “compassion.” Brittney heads off to college this fall, and we’re thrilled to help support her dream of becoming a biomedical engineer. Check out her video to hear Brittney’s story in her own words!
