Common App vs. Coalition App vs. School Apps: Your Platform Picker Guide

Published by cirkledin on

College applications are online now. That’s good! But it also means…platforms. So many platforms! Common App. Coalition App. School-specific apps right on the college website. It can be confusing! Which one should YOU use? Do you have to use them all? Are some better than others?

Don’t stress! Let’s break down the main college application platforms. We’ll see what each one is good for. And help YOU pick the right path to send in your college apps – the easy way and the smart way!

So Many Apps! Common App, Coalition App, School Sites – Help!

You’re making your college list. You go to apply. And then…platform overload! You see the Common Application. You see the Coalition Application. And some colleges just want you to apply right on THEIR website. It’s easy to get lost in all the choices. Which one should you pick? Are they all the same? Do colleges care which one you use? Let’s get clear on each platform and see which one might be best for YOU and your college list.

The Common App: The Big Name for a Reason

First up, the Common Application. You’ve probably heard of it. It’s the big name in college apps. Why is it so common? Because it’s used by almost a THOUSAND colleges! That’s a LOT. Key things to know about the Common App:

Used by Tons of Colleges: Yes, almost 1000 colleges use the Common App. That means you can apply to many schools all in one place. Super handy!

“Common” for a Reason: It’s called “Common” for a reason. It uses one common application form for all those schools. You fill out your info just ONCE, then send it to many colleges. Saves tons of time.

One Main Essay – Plus School “Supplements”: The Common App has one main essay that goes to all your schools. Then, some colleges add “supplement” essays just for their school (so, still some extra writing, but less than all new essays).

Good for Big, Broad Lists: If you are applying to lots of different kinds of colleges, the Common App is often the easiest way to go. One app, many schools.

But… Can Feel a Bit “Generic”: Because it’s for so many schools, the Common App can feel a bit generic. It’s not super focused on any one college’s vibe or style.

The Coalition App: Focus on Access and Tools

Next up, the Coalition Application. It’s not as big as the Common App, but it’s got some cool things going for it too. Key things to know about the Coalition App:

Focus on “Access” for All Students: The Coalition App was started to help more students get to college, especially students from underrepresented groups or lower-income families. “Access” is a big focus for them.

“Locker” Tool to Start Early: The Coalition App has a “Locker” tool where you can start saving your essays, activities, and info as early as 9th grade. Good for getting organized early on.

Fee Waivers for Many Students: The Coalition App is known for offering fee waivers to many students who qualify for financial aid. If cost is a big worry, the Coalition App can help save on application fees.

Not Used By As Many Colleges: Not as many colleges use the Coalition App compared to the Common App. Check if YOUR colleges use it before you pick this platform.

Good for “Access” Focus and Early Planning: If you like the “access” mission or want to start planning your apps super early, the Coalition App can be a good choice. And fee waivers are a big plus for many students.

But… Smaller College Network: Just remember, fewer colleges use the Coalition App, so it might not work for all the schools on your list.

School-Specific Apps: Going Straight to the Source

Last up, school-specific applications. These are apps you fill out right on the COLLEGE’S OWN WEBSITE. Many colleges, especially big state schools or smaller colleges, use their own apps instead of the Common App or Coalition App. Key things to know about school-specific apps:

Directly on the College Website: You go right to the college website and find their “Apply” or “Admissions” section to fill out their app. No Common App or Coalition App middleman.

Often More Tailored to That School: School-specific apps can feel more personal to THAT college. The questions might be more focused on their specific programs or campus vibe.

Can Show Extra Interest (Maybe): Some think applying directly on a school’s website shows extra “demonstrated interest” in THAT school. Colleges see you went the extra step to apply right to them. (But Common App or Coalition App usually works just fine for showing interest too).

More Work if Applying to Many Schools: If you are applying to lots of colleges that use school-specific apps, it can be more work. You have to fill out each app separately on each college’s website. Less streamlined than one Common App for many schools.

Good for Deep Focus on a Few Schools: If you are only applying to a few colleges, and they use their own apps, school-specific apps can be a good way to go. Direct and focused.

But… More Work for Big Lists: If you have a long college list with many school-specific apps, it can get time-consuming to fill out each one separately.

Key Question #1: Where Do YOUR Colleges “Live”?

Okay, Common App, Coalition App, school-specific – which to pick? First, the most practical question: WHERE do your colleges “live”?

  • Make a List of YOUR Colleges: List out ALL the colleges you want to apply to.
  • Check Which Apps They Use: Go to EACH college website. Look for their “Admissions” or “Apply” section. See which application platform they use. Do they use Common App? Coalition App? Or their own school-specific app? Make a note for each college on your list.
  • See Which App is Most “Common” for YOU: Look at your list. Which application platform is used by MOST of the schools on YOUR list? That might be the easiest main platform for YOU to use.

Key Question #2: Does “Fee Waiver” Matter for You?

Application fees can add up fast! If cost is a big worry, think about fee waivers.

  • Coalition App = Fee Waiver Friendly: The Coalition App is known for offering fee waivers to many students who qualify for aid. If fee waivers are key for you, Coalition App is a good option to check.
  • Common App and School Apps Too – Waivers Available: Common App and many school-specific apps also offer fee waivers, but sometimes it’s a bit harder to find or qualify for them compared to Coalition App.
  • Research Fee Waiver Policies: For each platform and each college, research their fee waiver policies. See which ones you might qualify for and which platform makes it easiest to get fees waived.

Key Question #3: Do You Want “Streamlined” or “Direct”?

Think about your own style. Do you want a super-streamlined app process? Or do you like a more direct, focused approach to each school?

  • Common App = Super Streamlined: Common App is all about being streamlined. One app for many schools. Easy for applying to a big list fast.
  • School-Specific Apps = More Direct, More Work: School-specific apps are more work, but they give you a direct link to each college. Can feel more personal, but takes more time.
  • Coalition App = Somewhere in Between: Coalition App is a bit in the middle. Not as many schools as Common App, but still more than just school-specific apps.

Action Plan: Pick YOUR Best App Platforms Now!

Ready to pick the best college application platforms for YOU? Yes! Do these things now to make your smart platform choices:

  • List Your Colleges & Check Apps: List out ALL your colleges and check which application platforms they use (Common App, Coalition App, School-Specific).
  • Think “Fee Waivers” If Needed: If fee waivers are important for you, check out Coalition App and research fee waiver policies for Common App and your school-specific schools.
  • Decide “Streamlined” vs. “Direct”: Do you want a super-streamlined app process (Common App)? Or a more direct approach (School-Specific)? Or somewhere in between (Coalition App)? Pick what fits YOU best.
  • Pick YOUR Platforms & Get Started: Based on your college list, fee waiver needs, and style, pick the best application platforms for YOU. Then, get started building those applications!

Final Thought: The Right Platform, The Real YOU – That’s What Matters

Common App, Coalition App, or school-specific? They are just tools. The platform doesn’t matter as much as what you PUT INTO your applications. Focus on making YOUR application – your essays, your activities, your portfolio – amazing, no matter which platform you use. The right platform for YOU is just the one that makes it easiest to show the real, awesome YOU to colleges!
